Senior Consultant – North American Natural Gas

PIRA is looking for a senior consultant with a significant (8+ years) industry-analysis experience to help spearhead PIRA’s growing market research and modeling on North American natural gas pipelines and infrastructure.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Forecast and provide supporting analysis for North American infrastructure projects especially pipelines and storage.
  • Develop and maintain various natural gas pipeline, storage and LNG project databases.
  • Author and contribute to regular written reports, specifically, but not limited to, pipeline/infrastructure issues.
  • Liaison between North American Natural Gas and Global Gas groups regarding North American LNG and gas pricing.
  • Create and update presentation materials for PIRA events and seminars, private client briefings, and other engagements.
  • Make presentations at private client briefings (onsite, via WebEx, or at PIRA's office) and seminars.
  • Develop and update infrastructure maps on North American pipelines, storage, LNG, and other related projects.
  • Communicate and engage with clients by phone and email particularly regarding infrastructure and LNG projects.
  • General support of the North American natural gas group’s and firm's consulting activities.


  • 8+ years of analysis, consulting, investment banking, equity research, energy industry or equivalent professional experience; natural gas pipeline company experience highly recommended.
  • Experience working on and/or with U.S. natural gas pipelines; knowledge should include pipeline rate and regulatory issues.
  • Experience and knowledge of North American LNG export projects including regulatory and construction issues is recommended.
  • Strong analytical thinking and modeling skills.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills. (Provide recent writing samples.)
  • Knowledge and use of the GPCM (Gas Pipeline Competition Model) and related input/output is recommended.
  • Strong computer skills, especially in Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Successful candidates will possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit and be highly self-directed and motivated.

Analyst – Global Refining Markets

PIRA seeks someone to keep abreast of worldwide oil market developments by gathering, examining and interpreting information on refinery capacity, throughput and operations, storage, pipelines, and demand, and then precisely feed this information into databases, reports, and client presentations that will communicate PIRA’s views.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Research and gather information on existing refinery capacity, throughput, crude supplies, pipeline transportation infrastructure, and product demand
  • Assess historical trends using statistical analysis
  • Identify and assess new refining and petrochemical projects
  • Maintain expansive and complex databases
  • Build and execute models and formulas to update forecasts
  • Assist in generating reports and presentations
  • Handle client queries


  • College graduate, preferably in a technical field (sciences, engineering), finance or economics
  • 1-plus years of business experience, ideally in energy or petrochemical industry (but not required)
  • Computer savvy: Word, Excel and PowerPoint a must; Access desirable
  • Willing to work on data-entry and updating of databases
  • Strong ability to work with large amounts of numerical data, formulas, and mathematical models
  • Self-motivated to perform in a fast-moving, extremely detail- and task-oriented environment

Analyst – North American Oil Markets

PIRA is looking for a quantitative analyst to join the oil markets group, focusing on North American oil supply. Analysts have substantial responsibility in terms of research and modeling.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating, restructuring, and maintaining models that forecast oil supply, including U.S. shale oil production and Canadian oil sands production.
  • Researching trends in production by reviewing operating-company earnings statements and presentations, analyzing rig and well data, and consulting the trade press.
  • Improving functionality and workflow efficiency of existing models and databases.
  • General support of the firm's consulting activities.


  • One to three years of consulting, investment banking, equity research, energy industry or equivalent professional experience.
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, statistics, operations research or a similar field with exposure to applied quantitative analysis and forecasting.
  • Expert in Microsoft Excel. At ease managing and creating complex Excel models, and using features such as pivot tables, matrix formulas and other advanced Excel functionality.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Experience and familiarity with the North American energy industry (and oil markets in particular) is preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of VBA for Excel, Microsoft Access, SQL, and advanced quantitative tools such as R are a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with DI Desktop is a plus, but not required.
  • Successful candidates will possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit, are highly self-directed and motivated, and work well under tight deadlines.
